Breaking barriers for a sustainable Active and Healthy Ageing through IoT

ACTIVAGE

ACTIVAGE is a European Multi Centric Large Scale Pilot on Smart Living Environments. The main objective is to build the first European IoT ecosystem across 9 Deployment Sites (DS) in seven European countries, reusing and scaling up underlying open and proprietary IoT platforms, technologies and standards, and integrating new interfaces needed to provide interoperability across these heterogeneous platforms, that will enable the deployment and operation at large scale of Active & Healthy Ageing IoT based solutions and services, supporting and extending the independent living of older adults in their living environments, and responding to real needs of caregivers, service providers and public authorities.

BehavAuth

The majority of Active and Healthy Ageing services build upon username/password based authentication, inheriting their drawbacks, jeopardizing the exposure of health-care data but also reducing the user acceptance of new technologies. Behavioural patterns constitute a unique characteristic of people in their daily life, which could provide valuable information in the process of verifying and identifying the users in information systems. BehavAuth will provide a secure and frictionless authentication mechanism ensures the security and privacy of individuals while provides a user- friendly approach.

Objective

The main objective of BehavAuth is to deploy, pilot and validate an innovative and mature behavioural authentication solution particularly suitable for Active and Healthy Ageing. This will be performed by leveraging currently deployed IoT infrastructure of four Deployment Sites combined with the AIOTES interoperability tools to validate both the ACTIVAGE framework and the BehavAuth platform while demonstrating the generated value through quantified metrics in order to better understand the needs and gaps of AHA services. Large-scale deployment followed by scale up preparation by creating a pipeline of potential customers will pave the way towards the AHA-IoT enabled markets.

The BehavAuth objectives are summarised into:

  • Extending the AHA services of the ACTIVAGE project on two DSs, by deploying a more secure and user-friendly authentication mechanism
  • Improving the security and the user acceptance of the current vulnerable and non-user-friendly authentication AHA services through a frictionless behavioural authentication mechanism.
  • Empowering the global outreach of the ACTIVAGE ecosystem, through continuous dissemination and communication activities combined with a clear sustainability plan that will continue after the end of the project.

Benefits to Active and Healthy Ageing

BehavAuth will facilitate the user acceptance of the ACTIVAGE framework by removing the overcomplicated username/password approach. BehavAuth will technologically benefit the ACTIVAGE project by:

  1. empowering security as it combines multiple biometrics and behavioural patterns, eliminating the errors of each individual method,
  2. easiness-to-use as the system does not require any user input; a factor particularly important for AHA,
  3. strengthening privacy as the users e.g. elderly people, become sole owners and having full control over their personal data and
  4. improving trustworthiness of AHA services through the use of behavioural authentication.

Furthermore, the BehavAuth project will provide evidence of the socio-economic impact of AHA services by monitoring factors regarding user acceptance, trust, benefits, privacy, user-experience while also validating the sustainability of AHA services through the evaluation of business models for care delivery.

Consortium

ACTIVAGE project comprises a large consortium of 49 partners distributed across Europe includings SMEs, industrial partners, research entities, public entities, academic institutes and others.

Key partners that Quadible is collaborating with are

  • Medtronic, which is the Project Coordinator and is responsible for the management and coordination of the project activities.
  • Samsung, handling the integration with the Leeds UK deployment site as well as the technical coordination of the trials.
  • Leeds City Council, supporting the adoption of the ACTIVAGE framework from the end-users including our behavioural authentication.
  • LifeSTech (Universidad Politécnica de Madrid), performs the coordination for the integration and deployment of our behavioural authentication at the Madrid deployment site.
  • Tercera Edad Activa, is responsible for the end-user engagement and technology adoption at the Madrid deployment site.

DEPLOYMENT SITES

Madrid - Spain Deployment Site

The Madrid DS focuses on early detection and prevention of cognitive performance decrease and also on falling risk of elderly individuals. Non-intrusive monitoring of daily living activities in people’s environment will allow increase of the independence due to personalised and ad-hoc interventions.

The aim of Madrid DS is to prevent the:

  1. decrease of the cognitive performance by personal brain training and reminders,
  2. falling by physical training and exercises and
  3. social isolation by encouraging users to establish and maintain active social interactions through mobile applications.

  • Tercera Edad Activa, (Leader) provides services to elderly and disabled people.
  • Fundacion Tecnalia Research & Innovation provides EQUIMETRIX technological service for balance assessment and training.
  • LifeSTech (Universidad Politécnica de Madrid), develops and implements the Daily Function Assistant as well as is responsible for the integration of the IoT ecosystem.

Supported by Empresa Municipal de Transportes de Madrid (EMT) providing EMT OpenData and services.

Leeds - UK Deployment Site

Leeds is a World Health Organisation Age Friendly City and member of the UK Network of Age Friendly cities. Leeds DS focuses on independent living support and personal health as well as symptoms monitoring. Energy monitoring equipment together with home sensors (door open/close, temperature, moisture etc)and smart multifunctional wearables will allow accident prevention through fall detection, emergency triggers, remote monitoring of vital health stats and non-intrusive behaviour/anomaly detection system. These will empower sustainability in elders lives for longer time.
